About Petrozene™

Petrozene™ is a a unique blend of organic compounds combined with specialized solvents developed from renewable resources that has been shown to positively affect many aspects of the oil and gas industry; from production and storage to end cycle refinement.  The formulation and base chemical constituency is unique to Petrozene

Petrozene Primary Uses
Petrozene™ is a proprietary solvent proven to dissolve and inhibit paraffin and asphaltenes build-up. Prevents and eliminates buildup of paraffins and asphaltenes in rail cars, tanker trucks, barges, tubing, flowlines, lead lines, treaters, stock tanks, pipelines, pumps & separators
Petrozene™ is a one-step process that dissolves the built-up materials and converts them from a waste into saleable products for additional revenue. Also used for down hole applications to reduce build up in pipe and increase yield

Used as an additive, Petrozene™ provides a cost-effective solution for dealing with tanker sludge, paraffin problems, storage tank maintenance, and more.  Petrozene™ is hydrocarbon-based allowing for a non-contamination use in many aspects of the oil and gas production and refinement.

Product Features

The Paraffin Problem and PETROZENE Solution

Paraffin buildup is an industry wide problem that occurs when paraffin crystals within the oil base combine into a waxy buildup. The resulting wax constricts production and strains equipment, causing losses from lowered production efficiency and increased maintenance costs. In some cases, the buildup can fully incapacitate oil operations. Petrozene is particularly effective in removing these types of sludge, paraffin, and other wax based deposits.

Paraffin precipitates out of waxy crudes when there is a slight change in equilibrium conditions, causing a loss of solubility of the wax in the crude. A lowering in temperature is the most common cause of paraffin precipitation, though many other factors can affect the process. Waxy crude will probably result in deposition when produced under one of the following conditions:

• Alternatively coating the pipe or vessel, then draining the oil, leaving a thin coating behind. Movement of this oil coating is too slow to prevent deposition
• Contact with an unusually cold surface, such as production through aquifiers, causes paraffin crystals to grow directly on the pipe wall
• Vessel surfaces are rough, providing excellent sites for paraffin deposition
• Electrical charges on various materials in the crude promote migration of separated waxes to the pipe wall.

In addition to paraffin buildup, tars or asphaltenes occur in many crudes as colloidally suspended solid particles. Precipitation takes place when the crude loses its ability to keep those particles dispersed. The solids form a layer of tacky, gummy sludge on the bottom of the storage tank that grows over time and eventually must be removed. Many of the same factors affecting paraffin deposition also affect asphaltene deposition.

Clean up and removal of paraffins and asphaltenes is typically long and difficult and results in large volumes of hazardous waste that must be disposed at a hazardous landfill via incineration at a very large cost to the client. There are many methods for dealing with paraffin and asphaltene buildup in the industry. However, none are as clean and cost effective as Petrozene, which has proved effective in helping dissolve solid or semi-solid paraffin and asphaltene deposits that form or collect near the formation face, piping, transportation and storage.  Petrozene acts as follows:

  • Reduces or dissolves wax deposits in vessels improving operations
  • Reduces or dissolves wax induced flowline restrictions
  • Reduces or dissolves wax deposits downhole increasing production
  • Reduce the pour point of paraffinic crude oils to meet contract specifications or improve flow
  • In addition to wellbore cleaning capabilities, the solvent can be squeezed into a formation to help remove asphaltenes precipitated within the reservoir.
Paraffin Wax Reduction After 3 Hours Soaking in Petrozene

Petrozene facilitates the dispersion of the paraffin crystals, and since it is also a dispersant, it serves to retain the paraffin in the oil phase. Similarly, asphaltene deposits are characterized by their insolubility in straight chain hydrocarbons such as kerosene and gasoline, but they are, however, soluble in Petrozene. Further, treatment with Petrozene requires little or no costly downtime for cleaning or halt in production. It is simply used as an additive to the oil base, and can be applied at any convenient point in the production or transportation process. Tests have shown that Petrozene can optimally be applied to any surface equipment where accumulation of paraffin occur, as well as added into flow lines and down hole. Other specific uses include removal of tanker sludge during transport, tank bottom cleanup, back washing filters, and to proactively aid in cleanup during well work over operations.

Improved Viscosity through PETROZENE

Petrozene™ is a proven additive that improves the viscosity during oil shipment and in storage and the percentage of Petrozene™ required to achieve the desired viscosity can be significantly less than other methods or materials.

Viscosity is the measure of a liquids resistance to flow, or its “thickness”.  The greater the viscosity, the more the fluid resists flow.  With regards to oil, crude oil API gravity 48 (condensate) has a viscosity of 3.8cst at 60 F whereas a crude oil with an API gravity 13 has a viscosity of 5400 cst at 60 F.  In other words, the 13 gravity oil is 1350 times more viscous.  The viscosity is similar to the viscosity of first drip molasses.

Viscosity is a very important factor with regards to oil production.  The simple explanation is that it is more difficult to flow thick, high viscosity oil.  Historically, heavy oil reserves which abound in North America, have been bypassed for lighter oils due the problems associated with production and refining.  Even if the oil is capable of being produced from the well, the oil was often unable to travel by pipeline to refineries due to the thickness, or could only be transported or produced during the summer months when the viscosity was lowered by radiant heat.  Methods used in the past to decrease the viscosity of the oil in the pipelines have included pipeline heaters or even adding low viscosity condensate at high concentrations (up to 25%) in order to thin the oil.

Petrozene provides an economically viable method for improving viscosity. Petrozene accomplishes its task by breaking down the large hydrocarbon chains without harming the oil quality.  With a reduction in oil viscosity water and sediment can quickly and easily separate from the crude, resulting in saleable oil without the need of using hot oil trucks, heating the oil or steam injection.

Transportation

In transportation of oil in tanker trucks, rail cars, or barges, paraffin and asphaltene residues buildup cause lost revenue due to:
• Reduced load capacity as buildup increases.
• Labor intensive steam cleaning, addition of heat, or other expensive chemicals.
• Cleaning can produce hazardous waste products that are expensive to dispose of or process.
• If not cleaned, paraffins and asphaltenes can eat at the metal.

Oil Wells

The effects of paraffin and asphaltene (tar) deposition in oil wellbores can be significant. Depositis in the wellbore, feedlines, and in the case of asphaltenes, sometimes in the formation, gradually choke production. Unless removed deposis will eventually stop oil flow. Usually asphaltenes form part of the paraffin deposit, complicating removal problems.

However, well treatment with Petrozene™ has been shown to:

• Significantly increase production in marginal wells
• Result in potential increase in oil and gas production through formation injection

Refineries

When crude is delivered to the refinery, it carries with it the paraffins and asphaltenes, which also can be deposited in piping and flowlines over time and create flow restrictions. It also builds up in the bottom of storage tanks. All of this requires expensive cleaning, typically resulting in the need for hazardous waste disposal, as well as costly downtime. However, Petrozene can save money for the refinery through:

• Cleaning piping and flowlines quicker through circulation of the Petrozene, resulting in less downtime
• Dissolving coker beads from frac trays
• Preventing buildup of paraffins and asphaltenes in tubing, flowlines, lead lines, treaters, stock tanks, pipelines, pumps & separators in the first place.
• Dissolving the bottoms in the storage tanks so they can be pumped out, and in most cases sold rather than disposed of as hazardous waste

Application of PETROZENE

 Typically Petrozene™ is applied directly on the surface of the built up paraffins, asphaltenes and other hydrocarbons to eliminate the build up
 It can also be added into the oil or hydrocarbon blend being transported to eliminate such build up or prevent it in the first place. The high specific gravity means Petrozene™ will layer between the transported oil and the residue build up enhancing and prolonging the effectiveness of Petrozene™
 Some agitation can be helpful to speed up the process. This can happen during transport, while with storage a small pump can be used
 In applications with direct staff interaction requiring a higher safety level, Petrozene™ with a higher flashpoint can be used
 Consult our representatives for specific volumes and applications. However, typical use for primary applications are as follows:

Downhole:

Whenever the well is below the desired output, the following procedure can be performed:

1. Pull well down until it is at the perforation or as low as it can pull it down.
2. Pour the specified amount of Petrozene down the casing.
3. Pour oil down casing after Petrozene to make sure that the Petrozene is flushed all the way down to the bottom of the well.
4. Pressurize the well with Nitrogen to force the Petrozene into the formation.
5. Allow the formation and well to soak for a time to be specified based on the well .
6. After soaking, recirculate the well for 24 hours to allow the Petrozene to clean the tubing, sucker rod and the annulus.
7. Once recirculation time is complete, return to normal operations.

Production yield improvements in wells of 25% to 30% are not uncommon after using Petrozene. To maintain the rate of production the process may be repeated every 2 to 4 months, depending on the well size and type of crude

Transportation
For most transportation applications, Petrozene is introduced directly into the vehicle and breaks down the paraffin and asphaltene build up while the vehicle is in operation:

1. Petrozene should be added to the vehicle (tanker truck, rail car, barge) at a volume to be specified based on the size of the vehicle.
2. The Petrozene can be introduced while the vehicle is empty (other than the sludge buildup) or full.
3. In the course of the journey to or from the load out point the Petrozene will dissolve and emulsify the sludge.
4. When the vehicle is filled with crude, the dissolved/emulsified mixture will be mixed with the crude.
5. The agitation caused by the vehicle in motion provides for adequate mixing
6. Upon arrival at the refinery or other load out point, the crude oil can be drained with the sludge and Petrozene dissolved in. As hydrocarbon based products, these should not cause problems during the load out

Petrozene may also be added periodically into vehicles as a preventative to avoid significant build up of sludges over time. .

Storage Tanks
Petrozene has been shown to clean storage tanks, even with unmaintained buildup of heavy sludges of over 15 years. Some agitation helps to speed up the process, as follows:

1. To clean tank bottom pull tank down to 1 or 2 ft of oil.
2. Apply the specified amount of Petrozene, depending on the size of the tank and the type of crude normally stored in the tank
3. Circulate oil or roll the tank with air or dry ice for 2 to 3 hours (depending on the size of the tank) to increase the contact efficiency with the bottom sediment.
4. Circulation can be done with a simple sparge blowing air into the oil using compressed air.
5. The Petrozene can be applied without circulation but will likely take a significantly longer period of time to dissolve the buildup
6. The sludge, mixed with the oil and Petrozene, can then be drained out of the storage tank.

If introduced in a refinery or similar setting, the Petrozene may also be used to clean out flow lines by recirculating it through the flow lines to the tank, or simply in a loop, over a 24 hour period.

Temperature

Petrozene has been shown in tests to be effective down to 0 F, but at lower rates of dissolution. It may take twice as long to dissolve the paraffin build up at 0 F versus 65 F, for example. Heating the Petrozene before use to 85 F may help in any application to speed up the rate of dissolution.

PETROZENE is Green

Petrozene™ is made from a byproduct of recycled scrap tires. This is considered a renewable resource as they would otherwise be landfilled. the process that creates Petrozene helps reduce the worldwide problem that petroleum waste products pose to our environment every year. This makes Petrozene one of the only “green” products on the market that can thoroughly dispose of paraffins and asphaltenes. But it is still a petroleum-based product, so it will not contaminate the oil reserve or stored crude to which it is being applied. This solves the environmental hazards that various petroleum waste products pose to the environment

To produce Petrozene, the scrap tires have various processes applied, including pyrolysis and certain proprietary post-processing including additives.

It is estimated that 300 million tires are scrapped each year. Tire stockpiles create a great health and safety risk. Tire fires can occur easily, burning for months, creating substantial pollution in the air and ground. An additional health risk, tire piles provide harborage for vermin and a breeding ground for mosquitoes that may carry diseases. Illegal dumping of scrap tires pollutes ravines, woods, deserts, and empty lots; which has led many states to pass scrap tire regulations requiring proper management.
